I’ve always been attracted to the margins
there’s an edge there
that cuts people wide open
their souls are laid bare
their pain is real
and when they jump
they change
When nothing makes sense
philosophy reigns
At the margins
people choose joy or sorrow
beaten men and women tell stories
and winners live without victory
At the margins…
People ask, “Is this all there is?”
They sink into the middle
or go over the edge
Few make their lives art
and the middle loves to hate them
or hates to love them
Living at the margins
takes style
an endless crescendo
that cannot be indulged
pleasure is traded for pain
and the battle rages forever
At the margins
geniuses live without vanity
and gods don’t know
They are living at the edge of their sanity
a far cry
from all security
Why?
Because
the margins call.
I like this poem. Your writing reminds me of Leonard Cohen. I may have said that last time I commented!
